1 million streams: the milestone and the money
A million streams is a milestone artists celebrate, and the money is real but smaller than many expect: about $3,000 to $5,000 before anyone else takes a share. Who owns the master decides who receives it. If you released through a distributor and own the recording, it reaches your account minus the distributor's cut. If you are signed, the label receives it and pays you your royalty rate on it, often after recouping an advance.
The same million on other platforms
| 1 million streams on | Paid to the rights holder |
|---|---|
| Apple Music | $6,200 to $10,000 |
| Amazon Music | $5,160 to $8,800 |
| YouTube Music | $4,490 to $5,490 |
| Spotify | $3,000 to $5,000 |
Per stream, Spotify sits below Apple Music and Amazon Music. In total money it can still be the biggest line on your statement, if more of your listeners are there. Compare platforms by your own listener counts, not by rate alone.
Before you spend it
Songwriting royalties are paid on top through your publisher or collection society, and they are not in these figures. On the other side, a co-producer's points, a featured artist's share and tax all come out. The calculator's split section shows each person's share of the $4,000 middle figure.
1 million Spotify streams by listener country
Spotify pays from a separate pool in each country, so the same streams pay differently depending on where your listeners are. We only have named, dated figures for two countries: 1 million streams from listeners in the United States pay about $3,900, and from listeners in Portugal about $1,800 (Ditto Music). Each is one figure from one source, so treat both as a guide.
For India, South Africa, Nigeria, the Philippines, the UK and everywhere else we have not found a per-country figure we can quote, so we do not give one. Your real audience is a mix of countries anyway: check where your listeners are in Spotify for Artists, and use the worldwide range unless most of them are in one of the countries above.

These convert the dollar figures (approx., ECB reference rate of 15 October 2026 (ECB)). They are not local pay rates: what a stream pays depends on where the listener is, and we only have sourced country figures for Spotify in the United States and Portugal. The ECB publishes no reference rate for the Nigerian naira, so there is no naira row. Pick a currency in the calculator above to convert your own result.
