Spotify royalties calculator: pay per stream in 2026
Spotify does not pay a fixed rate per stream. Rights holders received about $0.0030 to $0.0050 per stream on average ($3.00 to $5.00 per 1,000), so 1 million streams pay roughly $3,000 to $5,000. A track also needs 1,000 streams in 12 months to earn anything, and your distributor's cut comes off the top.

What Spotify pays per stream in 2026
A pool share, not a rate: the average moves with listener country and Premium vs free listening; this is what the rights holder is paid, before any distributor or label share. The table shows what that range means for common totals and three typical distributor cuts.
| Streams | Paid to rights holder (0% cut) | You keep at 9% | You keep at 15% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 streams | $3.00 to $5.00 | $2.73 to $4.55 | $2.55 to $4.25 |
| 10,000 streams | $30 to $50 | $27 to $46 | $26 to $43 |
| 100,000 streams | $300 to $500 | $273 to $455 | $255 to $425 |
| 1,000,000 streams | $3,000 to $5,000 | $2,730 to $4,550 | $2,550 to $4,250 |
Rate: $0.0030 to $0.0050 per stream ($3.00 to $5.00 per 1,000), sources 1 2 3 4. Distributor cuts: 0% is DistroKid's subscription model 1, 9% is CD Baby 1, 15% is RouteNote Free 1 and AWAL 1. All checked 15 October 2026. If you are signed to a label, multiply the last columns by your royalty rate.
How Spotify works out what a stream is worth
Spotify splits its royalty pool by streamshare: your share of all streams in a country in a month, times the money in that country's pool. Premium subscriptions bring in far more than ads, and some countries have much bigger pools than others, so the same play can be worth more than twice as much from one listener as from another. That is why the average sits in a band: Duetti measured $3.0 per 1,000 for independent master owners in 2024 data (Duetti), while Ditto Music puts the average at $0.003 to $0.005 per stream (Ditto Music).
Spotify also charges labels and distributors per track when it detects flagrant artificial streaming, and distributors pass that charge on. Spotify does not publish the amount; distributors report EUR 10 per flagged track per month (TuneCore support). Bought streams can cost you money instead of earning it.
Why it is a range, not one number
No source measures every Spotify payment, and each one covers different countries, years and plans. Here is what each says, word for word. The low end of our range is the lowest credible recent figure and the high end the highest.
| Source | What it says | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify for Artists | "Spotify does not pay artist royalties according to a per-play or per-stream rate" | Official |
| Duetti | "artists and other master owners received $3.41 per 1,000 streams ... Spotify ($3.0/1,000 streams) ... YouTube ... up $0.5 to $4.8/1,000 streams in 2024 ... Apple Music ($6.2/1,000 streams) ... Amazon Music ($8.8/1,000 streams)" | Third-party |

Free listeners against Premium listeners
A Premium listener's subscription brings more money into the pool than ads earn from a free listener, so an audience that mostly pays sits near the top of the range and a young or mostly free audience near the bottom. None of the sources we use split Spotify's figure by tier, so we cannot say exactly how big the gap is.
Where your listeners live matters as well, because each country has its own pool: Ditto Music gives $3.90 per 1,000 for listeners in the United States against $1.80 for Portugal (Ditto Music blog).
The Spotify 1,000-stream rule
Since 1 April 2024 a track has to reach 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months before Spotify pays any recorded royalties on it. Spotify's own words: "tracks must have reached a threshold of at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months" (Spotify for Artists). There is also a minimum number of unique listeners, and Spotify does not publish it (source).
The money those small tracks would have earned is not lost: it goes back into the pool for eligible tracks. Spotify says tracks with 1 to 1,000 yearly streams earned about $0.03 a month on average before the rule (source). The calculator above warns you when a track is under the line: type its streams for the last 12 months into the optional field.

Worked examples
- 1 million streams on Spotify pays about $3,000 to $5,000 to the rights holder. After a 15% distributor cut you keep $2,550 to $4,250.
- 100,000 streams pays about $300 to $500; 10,000 pays about $30 to $50.
- $1,000 takes about 200,000 to 333,000 streams with a 0% cut.
- Rent of $1,500 a month takes about 300,000 to 500,000 streams every month, before tax.
- A 50/50 split with a producer on 1 million streams: each of you gets about $1,500 to $2,500. Add collaborators in the calculator to see each person's share.
What these figures leave out
Every number here is the recording (master) side: what the platform pays the account that owns the recording, usually your distributor account. Songwriting money is separate. Mechanical and performance royalties for the composition go to the publisher, collection society or PRO, and US radio-style plays also earn SoundExchange money. None of that is in these figures, so a songwriter who owns their masters earns more than the table shows.
Questions artists ask
How much does Spotify pay per stream in 2026?
About $0.0030 to $0.0050 per stream to the rights holder on average, or $3.00 to $5.00 per 1,000 streams. Spotify itself says it does not pay a per-stream rate; the figure is an average from royalty statements. Your distributor's cut and any label share come off that.
How much is 1 million streams on Spotify?
Roughly $3,000 to $5,000 paid to the rights holder. With a distributor that keeps 0% you keep all of it; with a 15% cut you keep $2,550 to $4,250. Songwriting royalties are paid separately on top.
How many Spotify streams do you need to make $1,000?
About 200,000 to 333,000 streams with a 0% distributor cut, and about 235,000 to 392,000 with a 15% cut. Each track also has to pass 1,000 streams in 12 months to count.
How much does Spotify pay for 1,000 streams?
About $3.00 to $5.00 to the rights holder. That only applies if the track has passed 1,000 streams in the last 12 months; a track below the line earns nothing.
Does Spotify pay for songs with under 1,000 streams?
No. Since April 2024 a track needs at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months, plus an unpublished minimum of unique listeners, to earn recorded royalties. Its share goes to eligible tracks instead. Spotify for Artists.
Which country pays the most per Spotify stream?
Of the 2 countries where a named, dated source gives a figure, the United States has the highest figure ($3.90 per 1,000) and Portugal the lowest ($1.80). See Spotify in the United States.
Is it better to have more Premium listeners?
Yes. Premium streams pay more than free-tier streams, because subscriptions bring more money into the pool than ads do. You cannot choose your listeners, but it explains why two artists with the same stream count are paid differently.
