Spotify pay per stream in Portugal

The Portugal figure is a per-stream estimate of $1.80 per 1,000 (Ditto Music blog). In the source's own words: "listeners in Portugal will only pay $0.0018" (Ditto Music blog). Single figure from one source, a distributor's 2026 guide, so low and high are the same; it is an average across free and Premium listeners, and your own mix moves it.

This is one figure from one source, so we show it as a single number rather than a range. Free and Premium listening, the month and the mix of your audience all move what you are really paid, so treat it as a guide, not a promise.

How Portugal compares

At the middle of its range, a stream from Portugal is worth about 0.46 times a stream from the United States, and 0.45 times the worldwide Spotify average. It ranks 2 of 2 among the countries where we have a sourced figure.

CountryPer 1,000 streams1 million streamsSources
United States$3.90$3,9001
Portugal$1.80$1,8001

Countries are ranked by the middle of their range. We list a country only when a named, dated source gives a figure for listeners there, and we quote that source word for word; more countries get a page as we find figures we can quote.

Free and Premium listeners

We do not have separate free-tier and Premium figures for Portugal, only one average across both. Free streams pay less than Premium streams everywhere, because ads bring less money into the pool than subscriptions, so an audience that mostly listens free will sit below this figure and one that mostly pays will sit above it.

Why there is no fixed rate per stream

Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon and the others pay from a monthly pool: subscription and ad money in each market, minus the platform's share, divided by every stream in that market. Spotify says it directly: "Spotify does not pay artist royalties according to a per-play or per-stream rate" (Spotify for Artists). The per-stream figures people quote are averages worked out afterwards from royalty statements, which is why they move every month and differ between sources.

For listeners in Portugal that means your money depends on how much subscription and ad money Spotify takes in there and how many streams share it. Your listeners are rarely all in one country: check where they are in Spotify for Artists and set the country in the calculator above, or leave it on the worldwide average for a mixed audience.

The Spotify 1,000-stream rule

Since 1 April 2024 a track has to reach 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months before Spotify pays any recorded royalties on it. Spotify's own words: "tracks must have reached a threshold of at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months" (Spotify for Artists). There is also a minimum number of unique listeners, and Spotify does not publish it (source).

The money those small tracks would have earned is not lost: it goes back into the pool for eligible tracks. Spotify says tracks with 1 to 1,000 yearly streams earned about $0.03 a month on average before the rule (source). The calculator above warns you when a track is under the line: type its streams for the last 12 months into the optional field.

What these figures leave out

Every number here is the recording (master) side: what the platform pays the account that owns the recording, usually your distributor account. Songwriting money is separate. Mechanical and performance royalties for the composition go to the publisher, collection society or PRO, and US radio-style plays also earn SoundExchange money. None of that is in these figures, so a songwriter who owns their masters earns more than the table shows.

Questions artists ask

How much does Spotify pay per stream in Portugal?

About $0.0018 per stream to the rights holder, or $1.80 per 1,000 streams, from one dated third-party figure checked 15 October 2026. Spotify itself does not publish a per-stream rate.

How much is 1 million Spotify streams in Portugal?

Roughly $1,800 to the rights holder, if all the streams come from listeners in Portugal. With a 15% distributor cut you keep $1,530.

How many Spotify streams from Portugal make $1,000?

About 556,000 streams with a 0% distributor cut, and about 654,000 with a 15% cut.

Does Spotify pay more or less in Portugal than in the US?

Less, at the middle of both ranges: a stream from Portugal is worth about 0.46 times a US stream. Each market's royalty pool depends on the subscription and ad money there and how many listeners pay.

Do streams from Portugal count toward the 1,000-stream rule?

The rule is about a track's total streams in the previous 12 months, and Spotify's wording does not split it by country. Below 1,000, the track earns nothing anywhere.

Why is the Portugal figure a single number?

Because only one named, dated source gives a figure for listeners in Portugal, and it gives one average. Your own mix of free and Premium listeners, and the month, decide whether you land above or below it.
