Deezer's artist-centric model
In late 2023 Deezer and Universal launched an artist-centric payment model, first in France and later in more markets. It gives a double boost to "those who have a minimum of 1,000 streams per month by a minimum of 500 unique listeners" (Deezer newsroom). If your Deezer audience is above that line, your streams count twice in the pool; if it is below, the same pool is split among more boosted artists.
Why it is a range, not one number
No source measures every Deezer payment, and each one covers different countries, years and plans. Here is what each says, word for word. The low end of our range is the lowest credible recent figure and the high end the highest.
| Source | What it says | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Deezer newsroom | "those who have a minimum of 1,000 streams per month by a minimum of 500 unique listeners" | Official |
| LANDR royalty calculator | "Deezer $0.00935 - $0.01143" | Third-party |
Why the Deezer figure is low confidence
Only one source we checked gives a Deezer figure: a calculator built on distributor data, at $9.35 to $11.43 per 1,000 (LANDR). Deezer itself publishes no per-stream rate, and with one source there is nothing to check the figure against. The artist-centric boost, the listener's country and free against paid listening all move it. Treat Deezer as low confidence and use the middle of the range for planning.
Worked examples
- 1 million streams on Deezer pays about $9,350 to $11,430 to the rights holder. After a 15% distributor cut you keep $7,948 to $9,716.
- 100,000 streams pays about $935 to $1,143; 10,000 pays about $94 to $114.
- $1,000 takes about 87,500 to 107,000 streams with a 0% cut.
- Rent of $1,500 a month takes about 131,000 to 160,000 streams every month, before tax.
- A 50/50 split with a producer on 1 million streams: each of you gets about $4,675 to $5,715. Add collaborators in the calculator to see each person's share.
What these figures leave out
Every number here is the recording (master) side: what the platform pays the account that owns the recording, usually your distributor account. Songwriting money is separate. Mechanical and performance royalties for the composition go to the publisher, collection society or PRO, and US radio-style plays also earn SoundExchange money. None of that is in these figures, so a songwriter who owns their masters earns more than the table shows.
