Trial reels for musicians: test five hooks before you commit

Make up to five versions of the same song video that differ only in the first five seconds, post each as an Instagram trial reel so it is shown to people who do not follow you, compare how each one does after a few days, and keep the winner on your profile. Paste your lyrics below to get five openings to test.

What a trial reel is

A trial reel is an Instagram reel that is shown to people who do not follow you, without appearing on your profile or in your followers' feeds. You can share it to your profile later if it does well. For musicians that makes it two things at once: a safe place to try content that feels awkward, and a simple way to test which opening works before the whole audience sees it.

The five-hook test, step by step

  1. Pick one moment of the song to test, ideally your lead clip.
  2. Film or edit five versions where only the first five seconds change: a different first frame, a different line of text on screen, a different angle or a different starting point in the song.
  3. Post all five as trial reels within a day or two of each other, at a time you would normally post. Publish them by hand.
  4. Wait a few days, then compare how many people watched past the opening and how many saved or shared each one.
  5. Share the winner to your profile and use what it taught you for the next song.

What to change in each version

Change one thing at a time where you can, so you know what made the difference. Five versions with five different songs teach you nothing about the hook.

When posts stop working

People get tired of seeing the same kind of video, the same way they tire of the same ad. If a format that worked starts to slow down in the middle of an album or EP, change the hooks, the formats and the first three seconds before you change your whole look. Trial reels make that cheap to test. The Soundbite Finder writes five openings for your lead clip each time you run a song.

Questions artists ask

Do trial reels show to my followers?

No. Trial reels are shown to people who do not follow you. You can share one to your profile afterwards if it does well.

How many versions should I test?

Up to five is plenty for one moment. More versions split the views too thinly to tell them apart.

How long should I wait before comparing?

A few days. Early numbers jump around; compare once each version has had a fair chance to be shown.

What should I compare?

How many people kept watching past the opening, and how many saved or shared the reel. Likes alone say less about whether a stranger cared.

Can I use trial reels for content I feel awkward about?

Yes. Because they go to people who do not know you, they are a low-pressure place to try new formats.
